Embracing the Nordic Way

Embracing the Nordic Way

As January's chill settles over the Twin Cities, locals are turning to a time-honored Nordic tradition to warm both body and spirit: the sauna. Our metropolitan area, with its strong Scandinavian heritage, offers numerous ways to experience this rejuvenating practice during the coldest month of the year.

Mobile Sauna Society Makes Waves

The 612 Sauna Society, Minnesota's first cooperative sauna society, continues to bring their mobile sauna experience to various locations throughout the metro area. Their signature "Stokeyard" sauna events combine traditional Finnish sauna practices with a uniquely Minnesota social atmosphere. In January, you can find them hosting regular sessions at Theodore Wirth Park, where participants can alternate between the warmth of the sauna and invigorating rolls in the snow--a true Nordic experience!

Cedar and Stone: A New Urban Retreat

Located in Minneapolis's North Loop, Cedar and Stone Nordic Sauna has become a popular destination for both sauna newcomers and enthusiasts. Their January calendar features special "New Year, New You" wellness packages that combine traditional sauna sessions with guided breathing exercises and cold plunges. Their facilities offer both public and private sessions, making it accessible for various comfort levels.

DIY Sauna Enthusiasts Unite

For those interested in the growing backyard sauna movement, the Twin Cities Sauna Builders Club is hosting their annual January meetup. This year's event features workshops on sustainable sauna construction, traditional sauna etiquette, and the health benefits of regular sauna use. The meetup provides an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow sauna enthusiasts and learn from experienced builders.

Upcoming January Events

  • January 13-14: Winter Sauna Fest at Theodore Wirth Park

  • January 20: Moonlight Sauna Session at Lake Nokomis

  • January 27: Sauna Building Workshop in Northeast Minneapolis

Health and Safety Reminder

Remember to stay hydrated and listen to your body when participating in sauna activities. Newcomers should start with shorter sessions and gradually increase duration as they become accustomed to the heat. Most venues provide guidelines and often have experienced staff to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Whether you're a seasoned sauna enthusiast or curious about trying something new this winter, the Twin Cities' vibrant sauna culture offers something for everyone. It's more than just a way to stay warm – it's a community experience that embraces our region's Nordic heritage while creating new traditions for the modern era.
