Homes with Stories and Surprises

Homes with Stories and Surprises

October in Minnesota always makes me notice homes differently. The way the light hits a Victorian porch, the creak of old floors, or the little nooks in attics reminds me that every home has a story. Some feel a little spooky, but often it’s just the character and age of the home shining through.

Here are two cool Minnesota facts that make exploring older homes even more fun. First, Minnesota has over 1,700 properties and historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places, each with its own unique story. Second, the Glensheen Mansion in Duluth boasts 39 rooms and covers 27,000 square feet of living space, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century life on Lake Superior’s North Shore.

Older homes often have quirks that make them feel alive. Floors might settle and creak, basements can be drafty, and attics spark curiosity. These details are part of their charm, but they also remind us to check things carefully if we’re buying or selling. Electrical systems, plumbing, and structure deserve attention because safety matters as much as beauty.

Homes are more than walls. They are the stories of the people who have lived there. This October, take a moment to notice the details that make your home or the ones you visit truly one of a kind.

Fun question: Do you have a quirky corner, hidden nook, or little detail in your home that tells its own story? I’d love to hear about it.
