Paddling the Chain of Lakes

Most people familiar with the Twin Cities know how great the cycling, walking, and jogging are at the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes. I wonder how many know how relaxing and enjoyable kayaking, peddle-boating or canoeing the Lakes can be--and just how easy it is.

A morning or afternoon on the water in the city is a great way to relax, get some exercise, and enjoy the city scenery from a different perspective. Motorized craft are not allowed on city lakes and you move according to how fast you paddle (or peddle), so it really can be a relaxing and peaceful experience. Or more strenuous, if it’s a workout you’re after. This can be a great solo activity or an out-of-the-ordinary outing for a family or friend group!

Renting your choice of watercraft is as easy as dropping by Wheel Fun Rentals on the north side of Bde Maka Ska right off of Lake Street. Walk-ins are welcome, but I would make a reservation on nicer days and weekends. Rentals cost $25-75 depending on type of craft rented and whether you want to be out for an hour or two or for an entire day.

Once you’re underway, you can choose to stay on Bde Maka Ska or sail north through the canal connecting it to Lake of the Isles. Bde Maka Ska tends to have more people and higher waves, and you’ll share the water with sailboats and other larger craft. Personally, I prefer Lake of the Isles for its calmer waters and slower pace, and because it’s one of my favorite places in the city. Give it a try!
